Michael Payano will graduate from Shelter Island High School in a few weeks, and plans to attend SUNY New Paltz in the fall, the first in his family to attend college.

When his clan gathers at the Southold Legion to recognize his achievements, it should be a great party. With one side of the family first-generation immigrants from the Dominican Republic, and the other potato and hay farmers with deep roots on the East End, it will be a bilingual, multicultural celebration. The Shelter Island varsity boys and girls spring track teams had two meets on the calendar this past week. The first was April 1 versus Port Jefferson; the second was April 5 versus Babylon.

At the former meet, junior Kal Lewis did it again — setting a new Shelter Island School record. Lewis broke Dan Fokine’s 22-year-old record for the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.4 seconds. (more…)

On Saturday, March 2, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and the New York State Federation (“Federation”) held the New York State Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The Federation includes all athletes from New York City public high schools, as well as athletes from private and Catholic high schools statewide. (more…)
