Lauren Gurney, 17, a junior at Shelter Island High School, decided earlier this spring that she would travel to play the game she loves. She joined Sag Harbor’s Pierson High School varsity softball team and one of her most important accomplishments — at least for her dad Dave Gurney’s sake — was getting a driver’s license a few weeks back. Shelter Island varsity volleyball has developed a tradition of ending the final day of the season by standing in a circle, reflecting on the highlights of the year. I always tell the team that I’m so proud to be their coach, and this season, despite our lopsided won-loss record, it was no different. (more…)

Island softball star Lauren Gurney is a member of a fast pitch softball travel team called the Long Island Express.
By winning a regional tournament in October, the Express qualified for the USSSA East National Championship in Salisbury/Ocean City, Maryland last month that had 72 teams competing from around the country. (more…)
