Life is ever changing. And the Island is changing — in some ways for the better, but in other ways, long-time residents would be quick to say, for the worse.
Ride along Route 114 heading south from North Ferry, and while the initial impression is positive, as you head up past Piccozzi’s gas station and continue south, it’s not long before you encounter views that Supervisor Gary Gerth and his predecessor, Jim Dougherty, have characterized as less than appealing. Mr. Dougherty, when he was in office, said the main thoroughfare of the Island had become “an eyesore.” (more…)

I get up early.

It was called The Pleasure Lounge, a sophisticated name for a 19th century barn behind a house off North Ferry Road. The venue was better suited to house livestock or store lima beans — two of its past uses — than host private and not-so-private parties fueled by gut bucket New Orleans boogie, friendship, communal spirit and other accelerants. Barbara “Buzz” Clark of Shelter Island died on January 20, 2019, at home surrounded by her family. She was 95 years old.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Shelter Island Funeral Home, 23 West Neck Road.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 26 at 11 a.m. at the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church, 32 North Ferry Road, officiated by the Reverend Robert Griffin.
