Library Director Terry Lucas points at a photograph of “The Old Windmill,” which was the location of the Island’s second library, and where the Shelter Island School now stands.
The Shelter Island Public Library recently tasked someone to take a bunch of old boxes labeled “Miscellaneous Information” out of a shed. The simple chore revealed not only old tax records, but a boon of historical treasures, including one document that explains the origin of the Island’s unique referential term of “harelegger.” (more…)

Chief Anthony Reiter and the Shelter Island Fire Department, Publics Works Commissioner Jay Card, the Employees of the Shelter Island Highway Department, the Shelter Island Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary and his hunting and fishing buddies for the most wonderful tribute and memorial that they produced for our son, friend, and brother, Barry W.
