JULIE LANE PHOTO Just added to the New York State Register of Historic Places is Shelter Island’s Smith-Ransome Japanese Bridge.

The bridge arched gently over a narrow inlet flowing from a lagoon, mirrored in the water that was dappled with rain one morning this week.

Beyond the bridge the calm blue water of Smith Cove opened up under the sky. (more…)

Tuesday in its work session, the  Town Board took up the issue of the IGA ordering town garbage bags but taking months to pay the town back. The other handful of retail outlets that sell the bags pay upfront when they’re ordered through the Highway Department, and keeps 10 percent of the sales.

A state-of-the-art public rest room is slated for Volunteer Park off Bridge Street.

A new unit for the park was originally proposed by Chamber of Commerce President Art Williams and will be funded in part by the chamber with a $35,000 contribution. Called “the Portland Loo,” the new rest room is a sleek, efficient, single-toilet  unit manufactured in Portland, Oregon, according to Public Works Commissioner Jay Card Jr. (more…)
