To the Editor:
Due to the emergency blood shortage in the New York Blood Center, the Town of Shelter Island is hosting the fourth annual summer blood drive on Thursday, July 25 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Emergency Medical Services Building, 12 Manwaring Road.

Blood donations typically decline in the summer when schools go on break and people take vacations, and tougher screening rules have left the New York Blood Center with just a two- to-three-day supply of some blood types. (more…)

Work together
To the Editor:
It is incumbent on the supervisor and the Town Board to ensure the economic viability of our community. For a business to thrive on Shelter Island, it must overcome numerous obstacles out of its control; including competition from neighboring towns and the weather. I have met with several small business owners and they are extremely nervous, bordering on the pessimistic regarding their future. Long Island tourism is a nearly $6 billion industry and we must continually find ways to tap into that and compete. (more…)

Now that I am nearly recovered and getting around with my walker, I take my pen to thank all the persons who took such good care of me and called the Shelter Island Police Department and the Emergency Medical Services when I fell near the North Ferry office over three months ago. (more…)
