Island Spirits, a new column by Susan Carey Dempsey, debuts.

Among the many joys of living on our sheltered island, between the North and South Forks, are the fine vineyards that have burgeoned on the East End over the last four decades. Having learned how to take full advantage of our climate for growing grapes, the winemakers have continued to develop products that can stand on their own, not pale imitations of well-known wines from other regions.

The gallery at the Shelter Island Library features new works of art by Island artists every two months. The portraits exhibit (pictured) was on display through December and January. The Reporter will publish several photos of the portraits in each issue through February. Beach art was hung on the gallery walls earlier this month and will be on display through March. The Reporter will also feature photos of the beach art.

One possible origin of Valentine’s Day says Saint Valentine was a Roman priest who married soldiers and their wives in secret.

So today is Valentine’s Day. A day that our culture has told us is about love and hearts and Cupid and chocolates and other gifts for those we love.
