To the Editor:
The front page news story in the October 5 Suffolk Times about local algae blooms seemed quite relevant to Shelter Island in many ways. The map that accompanied the story, showing numerous impacted areas (including perhaps three quarters of our shoreline) made the article even more meaningful. Not shown was Fresh Pond, which has certainly been affected and has received some attention. (more…)

In the quietest moment of every Shelter Island winter, Mashomack Preserve allows about 20 people to explore the windswept beach, old farm fields and briar-choked forest of the Katherine Ordway Wildlife Refuge. This year, I got to go along, as happy as if I’d scored tickets to “Hamilton.” The music — mainly birdsong — was just as good. (more…)

One way only?
It can be infuriating to watch the wheels of government turning as if they’re greased by Crazy Glue, with issues stuck in permanent discussion or, worse, immobilized by official silence.

And then there are times when careful deliberation is called for. The latter has applied to a recent call to make New York Avenue a one-way street. Town officials and the Police Department have heard complaints of a dangerous confluence of fast cars, three abreast walkers and oblivious bicyclists. (more…)
