Bilingual presentation and discussion with author at St. Mary’s

Join us on Friday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church for a fascinating reading and discussion with poet, author and critic Lila Zemborain and her son Lorenzo Bueno as they read in both Spanish and English from her latest book, Matrix Lux.

Lorenzo Bueno did the translation for his mother’s book since he was so closely attuned to her throughout her illness, treatment and recovery that he felt he was the best person to translate her poems from Spanish to English. Matrix Lux presents an extended meditation on illness, the body and spirituality. Ms.  Zemborain brings us into her daily meditation practice during her cancer diagnosis and treatment. There will be a Q&A following the reading.

Ms. Zemborain has been coming to Shelter Island since 1986. It’s her place of peace and where she creates her poems. She first came to New York City from her native Argentina to do a Ph.D. in Spanish American Literature. She went on to create and become the director of The Creative Writing in Spanish Program from 2009-2012. She retired from teaching at NYU this past year. In 2007 she was awarded the John Simon Guggenheim award.

Matrix Lux is the accumulation of her poetry books and two unpublished manuscripts. Poet Danielle Vogel writes, “The pages of Lila Zemborain’s Matrix Lux glimmer and pulse with the light of consciousness. A consciousness that directs the body’s complex biology — its material and spiritual communion.”

Don’t miss this very personal reading by a very accomplished poet and teacher, presented by the Shelter Island Public Library.
