Storm sticks around: More than 60 residences without power early Sunday

The nor’easter that blew in Friday night continues to batter Shelter Island and the East End. At 6:30 a.m. Sunday, PSEG reported 65 customers without power on the Island. 

Police Department Sgt. Anthony Rando told the Reporter at 6:40 a.m. that there were several trees blown down across power lines during the night and PSEG crews were working to restore power.

Highway Superintendent Ken Lewis Jr. reported a large tree on Bowditch Road that came down on power lines, but Highway Department crews were clearing it, and another tree causing problems came down in the Heights.

Coastal flooding occurred in several spots, including the usual locations of the Ram Island Causeways, West Neck Road and Bridge Street

“We anticipate additional coastal flooding during today’s high tide between 1l a.m. and 2 p.m.,” Sgt. Rando said.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is calling for more of the same for Sunday, with showers and thunderstorms possible after 2 p.m. The winds will be out of the east at about 26 mph and gusting as high as 43 mph, but will decrease significantly in the afternoon.

Tonight, the NWS is forecasting more rain and a possible thunderstorm, with winds remaining out of the east at around 11 mph, gusting as high as 21 mph.
