Havens Harvest is celebrated: A new fall tradition arrives
BY CHRISTOPHER CAREY
It was a crisp autumn morning outside the barn at the Shelter Island History Museum as Ray Congdon and his crew were firing up about a cord of wood for smoking and grilling. As volunteers decorated the tables with pumpkins and apples, an array of silent auction items were placed on display.
Excited to offer our community a completely new experience on this beautiful Shelter Island day, Havens Harvest was ready to begin.
At 2 p.m. guests arrived, greeted by our servers led by all-around star Debbie Speeches, and were treated to local hard and soft ciders, North Fork wines and local brews. King Andrew supplied a beautiful presentation of cheese, fruit, nuts and jams — made even more special with the appearance of Reeve’s and Jessie’s beautiful newborn Iona.
As the guests were entertained by Lisa and Tom with the Peconic County Ramblers, a hearty feast came forth — roasted clams and oysters, grilled sea bass sliders, smoked brisket sliders, vegetables and cinnamon roast apples for dessert. A great mix of guests were there to support the museum, and everyone enjoyed bidding on silent auction items donated generously by many local vendors, restaurants, golf courses, vineyards and artists. The beautiful music continued until 6 p.m. while the auction winners collected their treasures and guests lingered as they gathered around “Ray’s outdoor kitchen” a little past dusk.
It wasn’t just the wonderful smell of delicious food in the air, or the music we all enjoyed. It was the feeling that we were beginning a new autumn tradition. We’re so grateful for all who contributed to the success of this “Historic Event” which will support programming for all Islanders to enjoy.
