Okinawan sweet potatoes are one of my favorite foods. Having grown up in Hawaii, there was an abundance of them commonly found on dinner tables, menus and at luaus. But here in New York they’ve made their way onto my Most Wanted but Hard to Find List. (more…)

Well, Thanksgiving is over and it’s the Christmas season.
The Shelter Island Historical Society presents Santa’s Workshop in the Barn on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Shelter Island History Center.
The PTSA Holiday Boutique is where students shop for family members and volunteers wrap gifts. It is currently accepting donations of new and used items. Especially needed are gifts for dads, grandpas, uncles and brothers. Gift wrapping supplies are also needed. Donations can be dropped off in the Shelter Island School lobby through Tuesday, Dec. 10. Stuffed animals, clothing, blankets or other fabric gifts are not accepted. Details: [email protected]

50+ drop-in basketball: Sundays, noon to 2 p.m., school gym. No charge.
Adult coed drop-in basketball: Mondays and Thursdays, 7 to 8:30 p.m., school gym. No charge.
Adult coed drop-in soccer: Tuesdays, 7:30 to 10 p.m., school gym. No charge.
Kids can send letters to Santa via the Shelter Island Recreation Department.
Children can communicate with Santa Claus and his elves thanks to the team at Shelter Island Recreation (SIR).
