If part of your Election Day eve tradition is attending St. Mary’s Episcopal Church’s ham dinner, you may have wondered why and when this Island tradition was born.

The “when” is a difficult research project. A check of back issues of the Reporter don’t list it, but speculation is that it likely started some time about half a century ago. While there had been a number of write-ups in the Reporter about partisan pre-election dinners and other events, St. Mary’s appears to be the first non-partisan group to enter the fray, offering a pre-election night ham dinner. The mystery of what’s going on at Schmidt’s was aired at Town Hall Tuesday with some new information added to the puzzle. Supervisor Jim Dougherty said at the Town Board work session that Schmidt’s has until April 15 to upgrade its septic system before some action is taken. (more…)

For the second time in a matter months, there is word that Schmidt’s may not be long for Shelter Island.

But this time, the word is coming from owner Dennis Schmidt who wrote a large message on the front window of the store announcing that the business is for sale. He’s inviting interested parties to make him an offer. (more…)
