COURTESY PHOTO Known as a vector for the West Nile virus, this Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito has landed on a human finger.

Mosquito samples taken on Shelter Island have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The samples were collected on July 20-21 by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS).
Samples collected on the same dates revealed the presence of West Nile in nine other Suffolk County towns, according to the office of SCDHS Commissioner James Tomarken. (more…)

Supervisor Jim Dougherty has been appointed to the county’s Tick Control Advisory Committee. Not only will he speak for Shelter Island, but for all neighboring municipalities in his role as chairman of the East End Supervisors and Mayors Association. (more…)
