Melina Wein makes a business transition after 25 years

It’s the Melina Wein Team at Compass now.

“I’m very excited,” Ms. Wein said about the transition from an independent real estate agency to working under a corporate banner. “It’s a new and exciting adventure for us,” she said.

As for the affiliation with Compass, she said, “They could not have been better” in the talks they had that led to the decision. Their philosophy about how to do business and how to treat customers is totally in line with her own belief, she said.

Before Compass entered the picture, another real estate firm had approached Ms. Wein about joining forces, something she had not previously considered. Her immediate answer was no. But it started her thinking and realizing, like years ago when she started M. Wein Realty, that starting anew was exciting. “I loved building a business,” she said.

Now, almost 29 years in the real estate business, 25 with her own business, Ms. Wein said what she loves most is working with clients — buyers and sellers. What no longer draws her is the administrative aspects of operating a business and taking time to deal with building repairs, shopping for business insurance and everything else it takes to operate her own shop. It will suit her life at this stage to have more time with husband Marc Wein and to enjoy being a grandmother, she said.

Ms. Wein also sees joining with Compass — an international company — as the right move for her clients by presenting “unlimited opportunities” they would not have from the independent firm, she said.

If getting to know the Island and Islanders was exciting years ago, it is more exciting now to apply her knowledge to her home town, its people and all that makes it special to the part of the business she still loves. “We know the Island and its people and we know how to price real estate and what it takes” to have buyer and seller both happy with the deal, she said, referring to herself and her associate, licensed real estate salesperson Marianne Carey. The affiliation gives Compass the entree to Shelter Island it sought with people with a record of success in the business.

The office will remain open on Shelter Island, opening the market here to Compass with“unlimited opportunities,” Ms. Wein said. What she and Ms. Carey will have is “a broader reach” by their affiliation with the parent company, doing what they love, bringing the right buyers together with the most appropriate sellers.
