Shelter Island Police Department blotter: Sept. 2, 2026

Those named in arrest reports or receiving police summonses have not been convicted of a crime. In court, the charges against them may be reduced or withdrawn or the defendants may be found not guilty.

ARRESTS

On Aug. 26, at 4:05 p.m., Jennifer Lee, 56, of Brooklyn was arrested on a charge of petit larceny subsequent to an investigation into a report of a female shoplifting at a local business in the Center. After processing at Police Headquarters, the defendant was released on a desk appearance ticket directing her to return to Shelter Island Justice Court on a future date.

On Aug. 31, at 4:41 p.m., Cristian G. Villa Peralta of Hampton Bays was stopped after making an illegal turn from Smith Street onto Cove Way. After a DWI investigation, he was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction within 10 years; aggravated DWI with a blood alcohol level of .18%; making an illegal turn and driving without a seat belt. After being held overnight, he was arraigned before Shelter Island Justice Court, released on his own recognizance and directed to return on a future date. His vehicle was seized in accordance with the Suffolk County DWI Seizure law.

TRAFFIC TICKETS

Gina Flores of Uniondale was ticketed on Aug. 22 for cellphone use while driving on North Ferry Road.

Colin Finkelstein of New York City was issued a summons for speeding, 41 mph in a 25-mph zone, on New York Avenue on Aug. 23.

Robert Agoglia of Sag Harbor was ticketed for passing on the left on Manhanset Road on Aug. 24.

Edward A. Jimenez of Shelter Island was issued a summons on Locust Avenue for an unregistered vehicle on Aug. 24.

Rachel A. Byhofsky of New York City was ticketed for no/inadequate lights on South Ferry Road on Aug. 27.

14 parking tickets were issued last week.

MARINE SUMMONSES

Ryan M. Finter of Riverhead was ticketed for operating an unregistered motor vessel in West Neck Harbor on Aug. 23.

Brian T. Laudman of Baldwin was issued a summons for imprudent speed, causing a wake near the ferry in the South Channel on Aug. 23.

Manuel F. Alvaracon of Ridgewood was ticketed for sleeping on the beach at Shell Beach on Aug. 23.

Jaime Sigua Fasardo of Ridgewood was ticketed for sleeping on the beach at Shell Beach on Aug. 23.

MARINE INCIDENTS

Partially sunken vessels were reported in Cartwright and Silver Beach on Aug. 21; owners were contacted to de-water. 

Kayaks without proper storage permits in Silver Beach were impounded on Aug. 24. A 5-mph buoy washed ashore off Ram Island was recovered and placed in the old highway yard. 

Environmental Conservation Law checks were conducted on Aug. 22 on Ram Island and Silver Beach; Shell Beach and Ram Island on Aug. 23 with no violations observed. Marine training was performed on all vessels on Aug. 25. A caller reported a large gray vessel entangled in his anchor line on Aug. 27 resulting in contact between the vessels. An anchorage buoy that washed ashore in West Neck Harbor on Aug. 27 was returned to its permitted location. 

OTHER REPORTS

A confidential investigation was assigned on Aug. 25. Police responded to hazardous conditions due to storm-caused flooding and downed wires on Aug. 21, with assistance from Shelter Island Highway Department.

Officers responded to downed wires in Westmoreland on Aug. 25 and notified PSEG.

A person notified police on Aug. 27 that the public bathroom in the Heights had been locked for a long time, raising concern that a person might be locked in. An officer checked and confirmed no one was inside. The Highway Department was notified to check the lock.

Radar enforcement was conducted on Ram Island on Aug. 21 and 23; the Center on Aug. 22 and 27. A traffic stop of a minor on an unregistered electric dirtbike in Menantic on Aug. 21 resulted in a warning and contacting parents. An ebike rider without a helmet in the Center on Aug. 21 received a warning and was told to walk the bike home; parents were contacted.  

A natural death in West Neck was investigated on Aug. 23. A shoplifting incident was reported in the Center on Aug. 23. The vent cover at the town bathroom in West Neck was reported damaged on Aug. 24.

A red laser pointer was reported coming into a Center living room window on Aug. 26. No signs of criminal activity were found after a search by police.

In other reports: police attended the community Vigil of Hope; provided security for the Art Show and Craft Fair; responded to noise complaints; provided lift assists; conducted court duty; and assisted with ferry traffic.

ANIMAL INCIDENTS

A bat in a Silver Beach residence on Aug. 21 was escorted out by the Animal Control Officer. Responding to a report that a rabbit fell over in a Center yard for no apparent reason, the ACO found the animal deceased with injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle. Two snapping turtles in West Neck were relocated by the ACO on Aug. 23. The ACO retrieved an injured robin chick that fell from a 20-foot-high nest in Hay Beach on Aug. 27 and will care for it until released. 

Warnings were issued to owners walking dogs on the beach. The ACO assisted with several searches for dogs at large.

ALARMS

A smoke alarm was activated in West Neck on Aug. 21 by a malfunction. Shelter Island Fire Department was on the scene and confirmed. SIFD 2nd Assistant Chief PJ Lechmanski was on the scene of an alarm in West Neck on Aug. 21 and confirmed no emergency. A carbon monoxide alarm activation in Dering Harbor on Aug. 22 was determined to be false by SIFD. A smoke alarm activated by cooking in Hay Beach Aug. 22 was deemed appropriate by an SIFD Chief. A smoke alarm in Hay Beach on Aug. 23 was deemed false by SIFD. A smoke/CO alarm activated in Dering Harbor Aug. 24 was deemed false by Chief Lechmanski.

SIFD responded to a transformer fire in Longview on Aug. 25. PSEG was notified. Police officers closed off the roadway. Chief Lechmanski remained on the scene until PSEG arrived. A CO alarm was activated in the Center on Aug. 26. SIFD said CO was present but was unable to locate the source and shut off propane until a plumber could check. SIFD responded to a report of smoke in a Center kitchen on Aug. 27; a burnt muffin in the microwave was identified as the cause. SIFD ventilated the residence.

AIDED CASES

Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services and Stony Brook Paramedic responded to cases on Aug. 22, 23, 24 (2), 25 (2), and 26 (5).

Ten persons were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital. One person refused medical treatment.
