Storm update: Roads closed due to flooding, trees down, two residences without power
What was expected happened.
The late morning high tide, driven by high winds, flooded several Island roadways this morning. Bridge Street, West Neck Road and the causeways leading to Ram Island — major culprits in storm flooding — all saw water overflowing banks and settling in the roads.
Highway Superintendent Ken Lewis Jr told the Reporter at 12:30 p.m. that three more trees came down Saturday morning, adding to the two than were blown down last night. PSEG reported that two residence were without power at 12:30 p.m.
Mr. Lewis said. “Peak high tide was two hours ago so hopefully we’re going to see some receding in the next hour or two before we get the next high tide tonight.”
That tide is due at about 11:40 p.m.
The National Weather Service’s Saturday forecast called for coastal wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph, with isolated gusts reaching 60 mph possible in exposed areas of eastern Long Island.
A break in the rain Saturday afternoon could be short-lived. Steadier rain is expected Saturday night into Sunday morning, with showers lingering into Monday. Forecasters expect 3 to 4 inches across Long Island from Friday through Sunday.
