Plum Island’s future uncertain as presidential transition begins

Those working towards preserving Plum Island’s unused, natural acreage from development see both uncertainty and hope in their goal as a new presidential era begins.

The island is currently set to be sold by the federal government to the highest bidder, as operations from the Plum Island Animal Disease center will move to a new National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, Kansas expected to open in 2022.

New York State agrees to fight for Plum Island preservation

Elected officials from Southold Town and Suffolk County joined several advocacy groups Monday to urge a New York State Assembly committee to preserve Plum Island, which the federal government owns and plans to sell.

“I think it is critical that we join forces and fight this ill-advised sale of the island,” said Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell. “We need to do everything we can to keep it the way it is.” (more…)
