House fire draws multi-unit response: Lightning suspected cause, no injuries

Shelter Island Fire and Police Departments and Emergency Medical Services responded to a fire alarm at 6:29 a.m., Thursday morning on Ram Island. 

Two occupants of a single-family residence at 2A Tuthill Drive got out safely before the first responders arrived.

The SIFD quickly contained and extinguished the fire, with assistance from the Greenport and Sag Harbor Fire Depts.

The residents were evaluated on the scene as a precaution by the EMS personnel, who remained to provide assistance throughout the firefighting operations. One firefighter was treated for a small laceration, according to Fire Chief Max Pelletier. 

The fire was believed to have been related to storm activity, including lightning strikes. The Police Department initiated an on-scene investigation into the fire’s cause and origin but no criminal activity is suspected at this point, according to information released by SIPD.
