Councilman Albert Dickson to resign the end of October citing health reasons

An October surprise came a couple of days early for Shelter Island politics.

Councilman Albert Dickson, a Democrat, announced his resignation from the Town Board for health reasons at Tuesday’s work session effective at the end of October. Mr. Dickson said he will participate in budget talks to express his views through most of the process.

A Town Councilman from 2018-2021, and then again for 2024 through this year, next year would have been his final year in his term. 

Councilman Benjamin Dyett expressed his sadness that his colleague’s voice will no longer be heard at the Board’s table, saying that he brought views vital to decisions the entire Town Board made. His other colleagues expressed their disappointment at losing an informed and unique voice. 

In the Reporter’s endorsement for his election to his current term, the editorial staff noted that Mr. Dickson had always been up to speed on all issues facing the Island and has had sound ideas to improve the lives of residents. When he was Town Board liaison to the Water Advisory Committee, and during his service on the Board, Mr. Dickson knew water issues were much more than pollution plaguing drinking water, but all aspects of the topic, from overuse by some residents to keeping our bays and creeks thriving.
