David Rogers, a professor of sociology and a devoted summer resident of Shelter Island, where he moonlighted as a jazz piano player for nearly 40 years, died on February 27 at his home in Manhattan. He was 88.

Pierce Senken is on an adventure of a lifetime. A 3rd Year Midshipman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, Pierce is the son of Gregory and Jane Senken of Shelter Island and Garden City.

I regret writing a third letter regarding the Village of Dering Harbor’s scorched-earth quest to ban property maintenance including lawn mowing Saturdays and Sundays May 1 through Columbus Day, including holidays, hidden behind a “Construction Law” amendment. (more…)

The license plate on the car in front of me read “NVRGVUP.” Although cryptic, it shouted “Never Give Up,” the perfect message for me.

I’ve been wandering since I sold my house over a year ago, not really homeless but, yes, without a home in the ordinary context of that word. I’ve stayed with friends or family and rented for short periods. (more…)
