David Rogers, a professor of sociology and a devoted summer resident of Shelter Island, where he moonlighted as a jazz piano player for nearly 40 years, died on February 27 at his home in Manhattan. He was 88.

The cause of death was prostate cancer, his family said. (more…)

At 3 p.m. on a Monday, The Pridwin Hotel’s kitchen is a place of good spirits, wit, jokes and energy, as the staff prepares for the dinner shift. A sign by the dishwashing station reads, “Please DO NOT put sharp knives in this water, Duja is very fond of his fingers.”

So far the sign is working, with Duja’s digits intact. (more…)

The Shelter Island Lions Club is an organization that is a beacon of hope bringing practical actions to bear to help the lives of Islanders of all ages, and especially for those in our community who are in need.

Each year the Lions crown a Citizen or Citizens of the Year rewarding those who have sacrificed their time and efforts to make Shelter Island a better place. This year is no exception, with the Lions announcing that John and Anu Kaasik will receive their most prestigious honor at a reception at The Pridwin Hotel on May 24. (more…)
