Journalist discusses ‘time capsule’

For residents of Shelter Island, who regard Gardiners Island as a distant, somewhat mysterious cousin, there can be few guides as well-acquainted with this 3,300-acre jewel as Karl Grossman, a journalist who first ventured there almost 50 years ago. Mr. Grossman, who has covered Long Island for more than four decades, writes the Suffolk Closeup column that appears weekly in the Reporter. He first met Robert David Lion Gardiner, the self-described “16th Lord of the Manor,” when he covered a large campout of Boy Scouts hosted by Mr. Gardiner in 1971.

More than just a pretty picture
Ms. Labrozzi won first place in A Social Whirl, A National Garden Club Standard Flower Show Photography Arts Contest with this picture of this Dahlia to fit the theme ‘Mighty Elements.’ Her award was for Botanical Arts Photography in the category ‘Fire.’ She also won the Botanical Arts Photography Award for overall excellence. The entries were displayed at Brecknock Hall in Greenport in September.

Although a handful of residents turned up at last Friday’s Town Board meeting to cite their opposition to the revisions of the dog law, the Town Board Tuesday agreed they will put the proposal to a vote at their Nov. 1 meeting, inserting two words. (more…)
