Union Chapel in the Grove welcomes David Lichtenstein, Ph.D., and members of the Shelter Island Historical Society on Sunday, July 7 at 10:30 am. Dr. Lichtenstein will speak about “A Treasure Hidden in Plain Sight,” the history of the Japanese-style bridge in South Ferry Hills. Members of the Historical Society will participate in the service as readers and ushers.

It was 5 a.m. on a dark March morning in the Heights, but the lights were bright at STARs Café.
Owner Pepe Martinez was in the kitchen setting up for the opening rush. After making himself a cup of green tea, he slipped on a pair of food-grade gloves and began the morning baking. (more…)
One of our favorite amateur Island historians, Tom Speeches, came through again with his description of the 1909 postcard sent by Brian Caputo of Commack. Mr. Caputo said he “collects vintage postcards from Shelter Island because it’s my favorite place.”

Town Engineer John Cronin will be able to get an intern started on creating a database of existing cesspools and septic systems on Shelter Island using money from The Group for the East End.
Town Engineer John Cronin won the day with enough Town Board members agreeing Tuesday to accept $4,000 from the Group for the East End to pay a student intern to collect records on existing septic systems and cesspools. (more…)
