Shelter Island Police Department blotter: April 2, 2026

Those named in arrest reports or receiving police summonses have not been convicted of a crime. In court, the charges against them may be reduced or withdrawn or the defendants may be found not guilty.

SUMMONS

Brayan Romo Angeles of Selden was ticketed on March 26 for speeding on New York Avenue, 39 mph in a 25-mph zone.

OTHER REPORTS

On March 20, police checked on a cyclist reported to have difficulty with his bike on North Ferry Road. There were no problems found. Information on hospice and funeral preparations was requested from police on March 20. Police investigated a report on March 20 of an unknown male walking around inside the Recycling Center. The individual explained that he had gotten locked in; the officer opened the gate. 

A driver in the South Ferry line was interviewed by police at 9:50 p.m. on March 20 after a complainant reported his vehicle failing to maintain lane. The driver reported being at work since 6 a.m. and fatigued. No signs of impairment or intoxication were evident and no violations observed.

A confidential investigation was opened on March 20. A broken wire from a pole to a Center house was observed and reported to PSEG on March 20.

Referrals to social services were provided on March 21 to a caller seeking guidance for another’s health concerns. A subject appeared at police headquarters on March 21 as required to register as a sex offender.

A property owner was made aware of a complaint about encroaching on a neighboring property on March 21 and agreed to rectify the situation.

A report of smoke coming from a beach near Winthrop Road was investigated on March 21. A small campfire was found, which complied with burn restrictions.

Responding to a complaint of a motorcycle riding in the woods in the Center on March 21, police canvassed the area with negative results.

A driver reported getting a flat tire from a large pot hole on Route 114 on March 21, requiring assistance in installing the spare by Liberty Towing. 

Responding to a reported burn ban violation in the Center on March 21, police found a fire pit in use and advised the resident of the burn ban; the fire was extinguished.

A caller reported a dead deer some 200 feet onto her property on March 23; she was advised where to call to have it removed. Police investigated a report of an unknown male walking on a Silver Beach property on March 23. No persons were observed in the area and the caller was advised.

A caller asked for police assistance with smoke coming from his vehicle on March 24; the responding officer found no smoke but an unusual odor and advised contacting a mechanic.

A report of unknown persons on a property was investigated on March 24; landscapers with leaf blowers were found. Radar enforcement was conducted in the Heights on March 23.

A complainant reported harassing phone calls on March 26. A downed wire in the Heights was reported to Verizon on March 26. 

In other reports, police conducted court duty, performed school crossing duty, submitted eJustice report validations, taught DARE lesson 8 to 5th grade, completed 3rd quarter rifle re-qualification, and assisted with North Ferry traffic.

ANIMAL INCIDENTS

A barking dog running at another dog in West Neck was reported to the Animal Control Officer (ACO) on March 19. An officer was called to a Longview location on March 21 where a deer appeared stunned, then walked slowly into the woods. The officer advised the complainant to contact police if the deer was observed in distress. 

The ACO collected dead birds from Ram Island on March 20 for disposal and contacted the DEC. Dead geese were picked up in Silver Beach and West Neck on the 21st and 22nd and reported. The ACO responded to a report of a choking dog in the Center on the 22nd; the dog had recovered when the ACO arrived. A sick or injured raccoon was reported in Mashomack on March 25; it was not present when the ACO arrived. A possum attacked by a dog in Harbor View on March 26 was taken by the ACO to Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rehab for care.

ALARMS

A door alarm was activated in a Center residence on March 25. A service person had set it off when opening the door; he was entering the wrong residence.

A life alert pendant was accidentally activated in Hilo on March 26. 

AIDED CASES

Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services and Stony Brook Paramedic responded to aided cases on March 20 and 26. Two persons were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital.
