Michael Payano will graduate from Shelter Island High School in a few weeks, and plans to attend SUNY New Paltz in the fall, the first in his family to attend college.
When his clan gathers at the Southold Legion to recognize his achievements, it should be a great party. With one side of the family first-generation immigrants from the Dominican Republic, and the other potato and hay farmers with deep roots on the East End, it will be a bilingual, multicultural celebration. On Saturday, March 2, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and the New York State Federation (“Federation”) held the New York State Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The Federation includes all athletes from New York City public high schools, as well as athletes from private and Catholic high schools statewide. (more…)

This past weekend Section XI, Suffolk County’s high school athletic governing body, hosted the spring track individual championships, also known as State Qualifiers at Comsewogue High School in Port Jefferson Station.
Of 7,000 athletes who compete in varsity public high school spring track in Suffolk County, only about 10 percent earn the honor of competing. Representing Shelter Island, four Indians, seniors Joshua Green and Lindsey Gallagher and sophomores Kal Lewis and Emma Gallagher earned the honor of being invited to compete at State Qualifiers.
