At the request of the Community Preservation Fund Advisory Committee, the Town Board voted during a special regular session Tuesday following its work session to allow the committee to file for a bond of up to $15 million if the committee needs to borrow money for a particular acquisition of property when it lacked sufficient funds. Last week my dog Mabel found a starfish on a Shelter Island Beach. I measured, Googled and identified it as a knobby starfish, native to Malaysia.

It was so perfect, and so far from home that it either fell off a seashell truck or was left as a prank. (You got me!)

Mabel was in favor of eating it. (more…)

Town Board members agreed at their May 30 work session that Shelter Island will adopt the Cornell Local Roads Program of standards for maintenance purposes.

It’s not necessary to reinvent the wheel when Cornell has done the work that applies to upkeep on what are mostly considered low-volume roadways, Town Engineer John Cronin said. (more…)

Janalyn Travis-Messer’s office is full of activity. She’s in the middle of building a house on the Island and as she bustles around her office/exhibition space for local artists, she’s keeping one eye on Nushka, her new, not quite perfectly house-trained puppy.

A guy wearing crusty work boots sticks his head in to say that over at the building site for her new house, “The slab is drying.” (more…)
