The sands of Crescent Beach, nudged constantly by the rolling waves of Peconic Bay and pounded by the feet of sun worshippers, responded compliantly to the creative forces of local artisans in the First Annual Sandcastle Contest on Sunday. Shaped into spiky towers, sturdy forts and even a giant turtle, the entries reflected the imaginations and skills of the teams building them. (more…)

When it gets very hot on Shelter Island, chickens lay fewer eggs, turkeys call a temporary truce in the battle for reproductive rights and the horses on Midway Road stand so still that if not for an occasional flick of withers or tail, I could mistake them for Breyer models.

The dog days are the hottest six weeks of summer when Sirius, the Dog Star rises. Dog days call for indolence and most animals comply. (more…)

The 61st annual Shelter Island Fireworks on Saturday, July 7 went off without a hitch, with hundreds of people gathering on Crescent Beach with their families to eat, drink, and be merry before the fireworks at 9 p.m.
